“One Team” collaborative approach syncs Calgary’s Crowchild Trail retaining wall project

AIL is proud to be partnering with Graham Infrastructure LP on Calgary’s $62 million Short-Term Improvements Project on the Crowchild Trail. Working very closely with the Graham team, we have been able to navigate a very complex three-tiered retaining-wall design, an extremely tight site/schedule and winter conditions.

Complex design, extremely tight site/schedule and winter conditions
We also collaborated with the project Consultants — Associated Engineering and ISL Engineering & Land Services — to come up with a suitable three-tiered design for the steep embankment, which is wedged in very narrow space. The bottom tier is made from a Precast Concrete Lagging Panel Wall, while the top two tiers use our MSE Precast Panel Walls.

Because of the nature of this high-traffic site with virtually no laydown area, smaller-lot nighttime material deliveries were required when detours could be in place. So it was critical that everyone was in sync. Close collaboration between the AIL and Graham teams was key.

AIL also provided winter installation guidance and worked with the multi-partner team to create work plans and method specs for compaction. A no-fine 40 mm drain rock backfill was used in order to facilitate winter installation.

Calgary’s Crowchild Trail retaining-wall project

Serving over 107,000 vehicles a day, Crowchild Trail is a major north-south corridor in the City. The Short-Term Improvements Project extends 2 km and includes the partial demolition, rehabilitation and retrofitting/widening of bridges and roadways to add new traffic lanes in each direction. Work is taking place along and over heavily trafficked roadways as well as the Bow River and the main Canadian Pacific Rail line. Construction is ongoing.

    The Trans Canada Highway (16th Avenue North) is a major east-west transportation route through Calgary connecting the provincial and national highway systems. Bowfort Road serves Canada Olympic Park to the south and residential/business districts to the north. The previous intersection was not capable of handling the traffic volumes generated by any large-scale events or the 60,000 vehicles that pass through this area every day.

    When the City of Edmonton decided to undertake a major interchange project at the site of its busiest intersection – 23rd Avenue at Gateway Boulevard, serving over 100,000 vehicles a day – time and money were of the essence. AIL was awarded the contract to supply 25 AIL MSE Retaining Wall Systems to be constructed over a 14-month period. The walls were used primarily in fill applications to elevate 23rd Avenue and convert the level, signaled intersection into a split diamond interchange. The $260-million-plus, four-year effort also included five bridges; roadway, railway and drainage construction and the re-alignment of major oil and gas pipelines.
