Spanning 67 kilometres and boasting 26 stations, Montréal’s Réseau express métropolitain (REM) is a new, fully automated electric light metro system which will connect with existing transport systems and link the South Shore, North Shore, West Island, downtown and Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.
AIL is pleased to have been selected to play a “supporting” role in this notable project by manufacturing and supplying about 370 sections of Corrugated Steel Pipe (CSP) which were used as underground caissons for forming the concrete support piers for the elevated sections of the line.
Project required daily co-ordination of staggered deliveries
Logistically, this was a very challenging project requiring oversize load deliveries to as many as three different sites a day. Our Louiseville, QC, plant needed to produce the pipe according to the delivery schedule but the client often had to shuffle the delivery schedule because of unforeseen events at the sites.
We’d like to give a shout out to project contractor, Aecon, for doing a tremendous job on the communications front, and to our specialized carrier, Transport Vilmik, for their flexibility in ensuring every pipe section made it to the proper site destination on time. And this was no small task, as it meant crossing Montreal with pipe sections of up to 28.12 m long — the longest continuous CSP ever made at AIL.
Naturally, our internal team at AIL Louiseville also had to be very on-task in coordinating the complexities of production and delivery with all parties.
